Yorkshire Sport Foundation have put together a really helpful newsletter full of ideas to keep you active at home during the lockdown – here’s the newsletter in full:

Home learning resources for PE

We know that you will have lots going through your mind right now – both personally and professionally. We hope that whatever situation you are in today, this email can make things a little easier, and not more overwhelming.

We hope that physical education will be part of your schools remote learning schedule, and we have listed some resources that you can share with colleagues and your pupils, to save you from needing to create your own.

All of us at Yorkshire Sport Foundation wish you well for what will be a challenging half-term.

Yorkshire Sport Foundation and leading national organisations, including the Association for Physical Education and the Youth Sport Trust, worked alongside physical educators from across the country to support parents to teach PE at home.

#ThisIsPE was one of the resources recommended by the Department for Education to support teachers and parents to deliver physical education during the first coronavirus lockdown.

Two-minute videos show parents and teachers free, fun and easy to follow PE activities for the whole family to enjoy together.

Each video will focus on a different aspect of the National Curriculum. Our series of short online videos, delivered by PE teachers, will help to continue your child’s skill development in PE.

You can see the videos listed under each curriculum strand here, or visit the YouTube playlist. The videos have been viewed more than 108,000 times on YouTube alone, with several thousand more views on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

We’ve prepared a toolkit that contains text you can copy for newsletters, websites and social media. Download it here.

Sported Christmas Message

Sported, the community sports organisation have put out their Christmas message:

We want to take a moment to thank you for your tenacity, bravery and endless commitment this year.

With the additional restrictions announced over the weekend (and prior for NI), it feels like a further uphill struggle both personally, and for groups that are constantly in flux and not knowing what’s around the corner.

And yet…

This year has shown the power of community groups like yours to step forward and play an essential role in bringing communities together. The stories of groups delivering activity packs to homes, sourcing technology, delivering food and care packages to vulnerable and isolated neighbours, making phonecalls to check in on people, setting up foodbanks, running online sessions and so much more have been inspiring and more than that, have shown how crucial Sported members are to the very fabric of our society. We’ve also been honoured to start working with group leaders to make sport more diverse and inclusive at all levels as part of the Black Lives Matter movement.

We believe that Sported being chosen as one of The Times/Sunday Times Christmas Appeal 2020 charities is a recognition of this and that it is a gamechanger for both Sported and the Sport for Development sector.

2020 has also been a year of reflection and consultation. Thanks to those of you who completed our member consultation and took part in focus groups. They’ve been invaluable and will shape how we deliver services and benefits going forward. Please watch the video below from Head of Services and Partnerships, Kathryn King and hear her talk about what you’ve told us and what we’re doing to answer the call.

We have great hopes for 2021 and we will be by your side every step of the way.

Until then, we wish you a healthy and safe festive season.

The membership@sported.org.uk inbox will be monitored over the holidays and we’re back on the 4th of January ready to hit the ground running.

Thank you for all you do and we look forward to supporting you in 2021.

We’re delighted that our own Nathan Mulhall was the recipient of the Christine Cruice Award for Overcoming Adversity at the weekend’s CP Sport Awards – their citation is below. Well done Nathan!

Nathan felt dismissed by his peers at school and in social sports and fell into bad habits. Finding sport initially though Halifax Wheelchair RL club, helped him turn this around and develop personally. He is an assistant coach at Halifax and is one of their two community coaches working in schools inspiring others. After receiving his university degree he is now seeking a teaching post. He also plays wheelchair basketball for his local club.

Speaking afterwards, Nathan said: “Buzzing to announce that I won the Christine Cruice Award for Overcoming Adversity at the CP Sport awards 2020. Just want to say thanks to Andy Atkinson and Malcolm Kielty for the nomination and a massive congratulations to all involved in the awards night tonight, it was great to see people much more inspirational than myself get recognition for all their hard work!”

The London Marathon Charitable Trust (The Trust) has awarded a £600,000 grant to a project that aims to improve the health and wellbeing of young homeless people in North England and Scotland through the power of sport.

The grant to Active Partnerships’ Young People Forward project was made possible by a generous donation of £600,000 from Virgin Money, the title sponsor of the London Marathon which is owned by London Marathon Events, the trading company for The Trust.

At Yorkshire Sport Foundation, we are delighted to be one of the Active Partnerships chosen to distribute this funding to local organisations.

Halifax Wheelchair Rugby League Club’s Grassroots £11,000 grant

Back in September 2020, Halifax Wheelchair Rugby League Club eceirved £11,168.44 from the CreatedBy RLWC2021 Capital Grants Legacy Programme.

The grant, which has been awarded to help more people play rugby league at grassroots level in the Calderdale area, will fund the club’s ‘new player’ recruitment drive.

Delivered in partnership between RLWC2021, the sport’s national governing body, the Rugby Football League, Sport England and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport, the CreatedBy programme is a funding pot of up to £10 million made available by the government to support the legacy of the Rugby League World Cup by growing participation in the sport.

The club will increase its stock of Sports Wheelchairs and playing equipment to enable growth amongst junior and first time participants.

As government guidelines start to allow a return to activity, our volunteer community coaches will be using the new equipment to inspire new participants, by delivering extra training capacity at club training sessions and match play, alongside delivery of activity within local schools to introduce the game to new audiences with the hope they will want to participate in future.

Malcolm Kielty MBE, Treasurer and founder of Halifax Wheelchair RLC, said: “As a club we are so honoured to be one of the recipients of this funding.

“As a relatively new element of the Rugby League ‘family’, Wheelchair Rugby League has already inspired many to play what is a unique integrated sport with several international players emanating from our local area culminating in Jack Brown crowned Golden Boot player of the world.

“We now aim to inspire the next generation of participants within this inclusive format of the game and help develop our player pathway to assist each individual to realise their ambition, notwithstanding enjoying every moment of their participation.”

Jon Dutton, Chief Executive, RLWC2021, said: “The CreatedBy RLWC2021 Capital Grants Programme is focused on ensuring the next generation of rugby league players have the best possible experience and barriers to participate are removed.

“We are delighted to award this grant to Halifax Wheelchair RLC and look forward to seeing the results of this investment that aims to deliver real change in their community.”

Ralph Rimmer, Chief Executive of the Rugby Football League, said: “Hosting the Rugby League World Cup in 2021 offers so many opportunities for everyone involved in the game in this country and beyond, and the facilities that will be delivered by the CreatedBy RLWC2021 Capital Grants Programme will be a big part of that transformation. The RFL are proud to be involved in that process, and we congratulate all the successful applicants – and look forward to the impact of this unprecedented level of investment in the game for years to come.”

Charles Johnston, Property Director, Sport England, said: “We are proud to be working in partnership to deliver the biggest government investment into grassroots rugby league facilities the country has ever seen. With this funding, communities will gain better access to the facilities, improved infrastructure and essential equipment they need to be active. We are pleased the investment will provide benefit to people engaging in the men’s, women’s and wheelchair game, with a focus on those disadvantaged areas where inactivity levels are stubbornly high. By focusing our efforts on increasing participation in the game, we’re ensuring that the Rugby League World Cup’s legacy lasts long after the last ball has been kicked and the crowds have gone home.”

The Rugby League World Cup 2021 will kick off on 23 October 2021, with the men’s, women’s and wheelchair competitions taking place simultaneously, under one tournament banner for the first time.

Clubs, organisations and communities that run rugby league activities are encouraged to apply for this legacy funding by visiting www.rlwc2021.com/facilities. For further information visit their official social media channels, on Twitter,
